Located in Menifee Valley, the city of Menifee, California offers mesmerizing views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Within the city limits are the communities of Paloma Valley, Sun City, parts of Romoland and Quail Valley, as well as the city center where Interstate 215 bisects Newport Road.
Considered to be part of the greater Los Angeles metro area, Menifee is home to more than 90,000 people. The city’s mild winters and hot, dry summers are likely what drew the first inhabitants to the area. The Luiseño people — in particular, the Pechanga Band — called the region home.
As the result of the Mexican-American War, Menifee was ceded to the United States by Mexico. While farming was the primary economic driver starting in around the mid-1800s, the discovery of a sizable quartz lode by the city’s namesake, Luther Menifee Wilson, encouraged the development of mining operations.
Originally, in the early 1880s, a single primary road ran through what is now known as Menifee. It was named “the road to San Diego.” Over time, roads were built with many of them being named after the family or families who lived on them or nearby.
For example, Bradley Road was named after the Bradley family. Its patriarch, Newton Bradley, worked on the Newport Ranch and served as an Antelope School Board Trustee for many years. Bundy Canyon got its name from the family of Joseph Bundy who arrived from Iowa in 1883. Local residents often call Bundy Canyon the “Y” because you need to either go right to Elsinore or left to Murrieta.
A Phoenix, Arizona building contractor, Del Webb, developed an active retirement community in Sun City, Arizona. In the early 1960s, he brought the same concept to Menifee and the community of Sun City was born. Located in the northwest portion of the city, today, Sun City offers a combination of both commercial and residential options.
Menifee continued to grow as a master-planned community, Menifee Lakes, was developed in the latter part of the 1980s and early 1990s. Romoland is located in the city’s northeastern sector and provides a mix of residential and commercial elements for the community’s residents. Quail Valley, a residential area situated in Menifee’s northwestern region, offers residents a semi-rural environment.
The growth of the city has continued as people from areas such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County and other parts of Southern California discovered its many amenities. In fact, it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state.
Given the glorious Mediterranean weather that is in abundance in Menifee, it’s not surprising that the city offers plenty to do outside. Aldergate Dog Park is not only a fun place for man’s best friend to play off-leash, but it also offers plenty for the whole family to enjoy. A baseball diamond, children’s playground, tennis court and basketball courts are just a few of the amenities available.
